Barring some small tweaks, the design of the game is identical to From Software’s original. The core mechanics are unchanged, the enemies are placed in the same positions and behave in the same ways, the devious tricks and traps are still there, ready to catch the unfamiliar off-guard. Companies have slowly been dipping their toes into a $70 price for new games, so this might be the end of the $60 standard. Hopefully PC games will still get a slight discount in some cases, but regardless, there’s always the next Steam sale. This new version of Demon’s Souls is being developed by Bluepoint Games, seemingly without From Software’s collaboration. Even if the remake never gets a PC port, you can at least play the original via emulation, with greatly improved resolution and framerate.

Most of how you play the game is dictated by a stamina meter that determines how much you can run, swing your sword, or block incoming blows. In combat, Demon’s Souls is largely about managing your stamina meter and timing, making sure to block certain attacks, dodge others, and strike when you have an opening–without overcommitting and leaving yourself open.

Repeated attacks will also allow you to plow past an enemy’s guard, albeit at a significant stamina cost. For an axe of its stature, the Ritual Blade’s Weight rating is only 10, making it easily usable by most characters regardless of your build. The Crescent Falchion isn’t well-suited for all builds, but it’s a must-have for anyone focusing on magic. The weapon scales very well with your Magic stat, and it allows you to passively regenerate mana while it is equipped.

Fortunately, there’s a pretty clear indicator that shows when you’ve gone above 50% of your equip weight, which is where those chunky, sluggish rolls start. Level up your Endurance stat at the Maiden in Black if you want to equip heavier armor and weapons but still remain agile. After (most likely) dying at the hands of Vanguard, you will lose your “body form” and awaken in “soul form.” You’ll do so with half the health points you have in body form, which obviously makes things difficult. At the heart of most Souslike games is a trial and error component which rewards persistence and forces you to learn the language of every encounter in order to survive. It’s a better representation of the ways that the genre’s challenges so often come down to your ability to recognize and execute on an opportunity.
