Finally, the update also changed Astro’s Playroom boot-up cover art. This isn’t the first time the game has received surprise content years after its release. It also featured a headphone jack, and a Multi Out port that meant the system could still be connected to a TV as normal. At the top, wait for the last block to slide left so you can stand on the left-hand side. Use a jump and Beam Glide to land on top of the block (just like you did before), then ride the block left through the Coins. From here you can jump left one last time to land on a button that reveals a Yellow Trampoline.
The PULSE Explores are PlayStation’s first wireless earbuds, and contain the same dual-microphone noise-cancelling technology from the PULSE 3D Wireless Headset. It uses planar magnetic driver tech to deliver higher-quality sound compared to older earbuds. The case also allows you to charge the earbuds, which is what the light bar on the bottom of it is for. The “Slim” model of the PlayStation 5 is 30% smaller than the launch model and replaces the front USB “Standard-A” port with a second “Type-C” port. Perhaps the most significant adjustment is that the Digital Edition could be upgraded with a disc drive, which the launch model was unable to do. On the right-hand side at the start of GPU Jungle is a lower platform of a Bot dancing in an orange head with blue jorts. This references 1996’s Crash Bandicoot on the PS1, developed by Naughty Dog and often considered the PlayStation’s earliest mascot-type character. The dance is the Crash dance created for Japanese ads of the game (specifically the modified one from the N-Sane Trilogy on PS4), while the mask is Aku Aku, Crash’s protector. When you get to the first silver Bounce Pillow, use it to get on top of the wall, then drop off the other side.
The use of PSPs however refers to an expanded 2006 PSP port, Monster Hunter Freedom, which was even more popular than the original. After the third and final use of the Hang Glider, on the right you’ll find a Bot in a slingshot, which you can Punch to send flying into some boxes. This references the 2007 game PAIN on PlayStation 3, developed by Idol Minds. It’s notable for becoming the most popular downloadable game on the PlayStation Network at the time. Up the same cliff as the Ico easter egg, on the opposite side you can find a crowd observing a Bot teeing off with a golf club while wearing a PS VR headset. Another example is the ball suit in which the player must swipe the touchpad to guide the ball. If Astro Bot falls or gets defeated, the level will restart from the latest checkpoint cleared. Boss Fight Trophies in Astro Playroom are unlocked by defeating specific bosses in various levels. These encounters are scattered across the game’s worlds‚ such as the T-Rex in “Casey’s Toybox” or the final boss in the “Playroom.” Each boss fight is unique and requires mastering Astro’s abilities. Defeating bosses rewards you with puzzle pieces and progresses the story.
Move controllers were also used for the hand-tracking controllers, although some games used the DualShock 4. The DualShock Controller is one of the most recognizable pieces of PlayStation history, and replaced the original pad as the pack-in controller. It added twin analog sticks (which could be pressed in for L3 and R3), a small and large rumble motor in either handle, and increased the height of the L2 and R2 buttons.

My favorite of them is GPU Jungle’s full robotic monkey suit, which leads to vertically-scrolling, 2D-view levels. Each of the four worlds in Astro’s Playroom contains at least one Special Bot waiting to be rescued. These bots are often trapped in cages or hidden behind environmental obstacles. Players must carefully explore each area, paying attention to visual cues and environmental hints, to locate the Special Bots and figure out how to free them. These additional trophies add to the overall playtime and enjoyment of Astro’s Playroom, giving players more content to explore and master. Obtaining all the Bronze trophies is not only crucial for unlocking the Platinum but also enhances the overall enjoyment of Astro’s Playroom.
I can’t say I had very high expectations for Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes free with every PlayStation 5 console. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. In the second mud pit of Gusty Gateway you’ll find a Bot carrying several crates while being surrounded by crabs. This is a reference to 2020’s Death Stranding by Kojima Productions on PS4, which stars Norman Reedus as courier Sam Bridges in a post-apocalyptic America.
Astro’s Playroom is a fantastic tech demo game that showcases the capabilities of the DualSense controller. The haptic feedback, motion sensor, and adaptive triggers make a significant difference, and the game successfully demonstrates these features. Yes, the game is a great showpiece for the PS5’s DualSense controller, applying its haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and motion-sensing technology to a variety of inventive situations. But Astro’s Playroom is much more than a tutorial; it’s a joyful and polished platformer that ushers in a new generation of PlayStation hardware with a big smile. If you’re new to platformers, or video games in general, you may find yourself rushing in and dying quickly for seemingly no reason.
