Turkish citizens are required to always carry an ID with them, and you should always carry a photo ID with your permanent residence noted with you. Turkey’s eVisa system is easy to use and only takes a couple of minutes to get your visa. Although visas are also available upon arrival, the eVisa system is faster, and offered at a better price. Sometimes you will be quoted a fee without the seller noting the currency. You may think it’s in Turkish Lira, but then find out it’s US Dollars or Euros. Although Turkey (Türkiye) is relatively safe, civil unrest, due to the political situation, and terrorism can occur at any time.

Another festival linked to Cappadocia is the Air Balloon Festival, taking place in the first week of July. During that time, a few dozen hot air balloons from different countries soar high into the sky, creating stunning and colorful scenery. In addition, visitors can enjoy traditional or exotic dances and a glow show throughout the night. Taxis are easy to find in Ankara, Istanbul, and most areas of Turkey tourists visit. You can choose from BiTaksi or Uber yellow and turquoise cabs outside airports, ports, and train stations. All it takes is downloading the app, registering, and looking for rides to your destination.

If you travel further, you’re also within easy reach of Dalaman Airport and spots like Olu Deniz and Marmaris. Use common sense and listen to your gut if you feel uncomfortable or unsure about anything. If you’re prepared and aware of local customs, traveling solo in Turkey is a piece of cake and as safe as anywhere else. There are some beautiful places along the border between Türkiye and Syria, but due to conflict in the area that’s been going on for years, it’s probably better to avoid them there for the time being. Places like Gaziantep, Mardin, and Hatay are lovely places you’ll want to go, but if you choose to go there, be more cautious and keep your eye on the news – just in case.
Many of the town’s historic wood-framed mansions have been restored to their original 17th-century grandeur, and converted into picture-perfect boutique hotels, cafes and restaurants. The region is also home to the ancient ruins of Troy (with a standout museum) and the spectacularly sited hilltop acropolis of Bergama. Exploring ancient sites works up quite an appetite but don’t worry – Şanlıurfa’s regional cuisine is super satisfying. Their yummy kebabs and lahmacuns (Turkish flatbread) are flavoured with the spicy isot pepper, unique to the region. Further away is the tomb and well of Prophet Job, whose skin disease was cured by bathing in the city’s waters.
